6 suspects plead guilty in Babita Deokaran murder case

The accused before court are thought to be hitmen who were hired for the job and who hired them, is still not clear.

Six men accused of arranging a hit on whistleblower Babita Deokaran appeared before the Johannesburg High Court where they all pleaded guilty to murder.

Phakamani Hadebe, Zitha Radebe, Phinda Ndlovu, Sanele Mbhele, Siphiwe Mazibuko and Siphakanyiswa Dladla appeared before the Court on August 22.

They stand accused of the murder of the alleged whistleblower who was fatally shot outside of her Winchester Hills home on August 23, 2021.

Deokaran was a senior finance official at the Gauteng Department of Health. She was in the process of exposing corruption to the tune of a billion rand in contracts at Thembisa Hospital.

The six accused have been charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

A memorial service to honour Babita Deokaran and mark two years since her passing will be held at Mondeor Recreation Center at 5:30 pm on August 23.
