Pensioners Day at The Glen Shopping Centre

Ward Councillors roll up their sleeves to help seniors with property rebates.

Ward councillors from several wards in Johannesburg South spent the day assisting pensioners with their documentation for the property rebates on July 19 at The Glen Shopping.

The councillors assisted with taking in rebates application forms, and certified documents, assisted people to register to vote and took on general service delivery queries. The day was a huge success where close to 600 rebates application forms were submitted.

Councillors present included Tyrell Meyers (Ward 23), Stuart Marais (Ward 54), Rashieda Landis (Ward 55), Michael Crichton (Ward 56), Faeeza Chame (Ward 57), Matsobane Sekhu (Ward 125), Solomon Maila (PR Councillor), and the Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South Manny de Freitas, who hosted the day.

The rebates are available to two groups of pensioners: those aged 60-69 and those over 70. A pensioner rebate must be renewed before the start of a new valuation roll, which is updated every four to five years, and those over 70 must apply annually.

Rebate application forms must be completed in person at a walk-in centre and a reference number obtained.
The rebate only applies to property taxes, and the residential property can only have one dwelling. The owner must be at least 60 years old and live on the premises.

The rebate also applies to property owners who have become pensioners due to injury, and it is granted for the duration of the valuation roll from the date of application.

Crichton said as councillors they have been receiving queries from the different wards about how people can apply for their rebates and so they decided the day to make the application process easier.

“We will now be submitting these applications and will ensure that the applicants receive an SMS with their reference number.

“I would like to thank The Glen Shopping Centre for granting us the opportunity to utilise their premises to have this day,” said Crichton.

De Freitas said: “I’m extremely pleased with how this day turned out. Assisting the elderly is close to all of our hearts and we will have another one of these days in the future.”
