His love for fashion started in 2002 and, being in the fashion industry for 18 years, fashion designer Nico Willoughby-Smith is stirring up a fashionable storm in Johannesburg south in the past 14 months that he has been living and working in Bassonia.

Nico’s career in the fashion industry started in Polokwane, Limpopo and he relocated to Bassonia when he received a business opportunity. Being listed as one of the top 10 best fashion designers in Johannesburg in October 2022, the eccentric Nico has grown from strength to strength in the world of fashion.

Nico strongly believes in giving back to the community, as they are a key part of his business. What better way to give back to the community of Johannesburg south than allowing one lucky matric learner to have her own matric farewell garment design come to life at the hands of a fashion designer?

“Fashion is what you wear. Style is how you wear it,” said Nico. “What better way to showcase one’s personal style than by creating a garment that captures the client’s character on their special day? After all, the matric farewell season is an exciting time for learners whereby it is the end of a phase in your life.”

There will be exciting prizes from possible sponsors added to the competition.

All matriculants interested in entering the Matric Farewell Win a Garment competition can follow these steps to stand a chance to win the prize.

How to enter

• Submit an A1 layout or collage that represents the ideas of the matric learner.

• Submit the A1 layout at 43 Steenbok Avenue Bassonia, Johannesburg south. The A1 drop-off should be by appointment only.

• The A1 layout or collage must include a photograph of the matric learner, a completed entry form, a colour and fabric chart, and dress, make-up and hairstyle ideas.

Terms and conditions

• The Evoking Elegance matric farewell competition is strictly for matriculants. The closing date is June 15.

• No friends or family of the sponsors may enter the competition.

• Your A1 layout or collage has to be delivered before June 15 at 43 Steenbok Avenue, Johannesburg south.

• All the sponsors of the competition will act as the panel of judges. The judging decision is final and they will award the winning learner the prize.

• The winning prize includes all trails leading to the matric farewell. The winner can exchange none of the prizes for cash and only the winner may use the prizes.
