Ward 106 councillor intervenes on pending threat

Following an oversight visit conducted by the City of Ekurhuleni’s dignitaries, they have assured to escalate the issue to relevant departments.

Before major rains set in, Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny devoted himself to intervening in South Crest’s ongoing battle of a river that passes through the area.

This river, which has in the past flooded because of heavy rain, has previously caused damage to the surrounding properties and is polluted to the point where residents cannot stand the stench.

The South Crest stream is separated by a road, with one section of the stream reportedly falling under the City of Ekurhuleni and another under the City of Johannesburg Municipality.

Officials from the City of Ekurhuleni present during the oversight visit promised to escalate this matter to the City of Johannesburg’s relevant departments.

“In the previous year, there were major floods causing destruction and almost loss of life and we want to prevent that from happening. I have engaged with various departments and have escalated this issue, asking for their support to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Denny.

The representatives assured Denny that they are going to immediately make the City of Joburg (CoJ) aware of this serious risk as the rain season fast approaches.

As a councillor, he said he is very concerned and that he has notified the disaster management department of the pending disaster that is looming.

“We have to take preventative action to clean the area just above the channel that runs through South Crest, which is separated by a road. If the channel is not cleaned, the debris will again come into South Crest stream and cause flooding. This time it might cause a loss of life,” he explained.

Denny said residents are fed up as they see no action from Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg’s side, which is why he is trying to do the best he can.
