WATCH: Bellavista family’s flat gutted by fire

Neighbours tried to help but the fire was too strong.

A Bellavista family is devastated after their flat in Citrine Court was gutted by fire on August 28.

They say they were out when they received a call in the afternoon saying their flat was on fire. Busiswe Mateyise said they quickly rushed home to find out what was happening.

With the hose not working on the second floor where the flat is situated, it was difficult for the neighbours to assist, however, they tried.

“When we got here the fire engine was called, it came, however, the fire had already done the damage. We heard that the fire started in our main bedroom and went to our children’s room where the damage wasn’t that bad.
“In our bedroom, we lost everything. Some of our appliances perished in the fire as well. At the moment we don’t know what started the fire,” explained Mateyise.

They are left with what they wore. The family is in desperate need of clothes and other necessities. Mateyise wears size 32 and shoe size 4, Sicelo Fodo wears size 32 and shoe size 7, while their two daughters Amanda (20) wears size 28 and shoe size 3, and Amzolele (8), who is a learner from Glenvista Primary School (school uniform also destroyed) wears a shoe size 1.

Patriotic Alliance’s Zanele O’Rayn was at the flat on August 29 when the Southern Courier visited the family. She said they are trying to get help from anyone to help the family. “We are working with an Islamic group to help the family. We have started the talks with them and we will get them anything we can,” she said.
