Rehab goes to the streets of Alberton

Different charities have partnered in a mission to take rehabilitation programmes to the people.

While restoring dignity and spreading love, different entities have partnered to introduce a programme aimed at helping people get off drugs and alcohol.

Ryan Ellapan of Salvation Foundation, working with Ravi Naidoo and Evette Kruger, are in the beginning stages of building relations towards bringing rehab to the streets.

With the help of family and friends, the trio is on a mission to curb drug addiction by introducing rehab programmes to those that cannot afford them, through their outreach programmes.

On July 4, the team took a morning out to provide warm meals to the homeless and jobseekers with the help of Chaplain CornĆ© van Tonder. The hot meals are a way of building relations with them ahead of the trioā€™s new life-changing programme.

According to Ellapan, their long-term vision is to run these rehabilitation services from a centre.

Ravi Naidoo shares hope.

ā€œWe are trying to take rehab programmes to the streets. We can counsel them and have one-on-one sessions, unlike a church service. We go to each person and hear their story, help them out and we meet with them in a week, empowering them as they rebuild their lives,ā€ he said.

Should they have a facility, Ellapan said they will be rendering those services from there and people will also know where to go to.

ā€œBefore we thought of this, we went around and spoke to the guys whom we know are back on the streets after returning from rehabs. They said it would be better if they were to be rehabilitated in an environment they are comfortable with. Some of them really want the help but they donā€™t know where to look for it,ā€ he explained.

In a week, they support hundreds of individuals including schools and communities.

Evette Kruger of Fearless Life Ministries said: ā€œIf we can launch a rehabilitation programme on the streets, the guys say they would be keen to commit.ā€

Part of the the outreach programme were Sunitha Ellapan, Ravi Naidoo, CornƩ van Tonder, Priscilla Moodley, Ryan Ellapan, Nicholas Narainsamy and Evette Kruger.

They have identified a place in Alberton North. ā€œIf we could find people who could fund us, we could at least use that store to run these services.ā€

Those willing to come on board to make the programme a success may contact Ryan Ellapan on 072 822 6106 or Evette Kruger on 082 966 7438.
