Proud dads, coaches reward Rakkers rugby beginners

Grade R learners from Laerskool Randhart’s Rakkers were honoured as rugby beginners after a successful season.

A group of parents from Laerskool Randhart’s Rakkers have given youngsters an opportunity to experience a safe and pleasurable rugby game from a tender age.

An amateur team of 40 budding rugby players, Grade R learners from the school, were awarded and recognised for their commitment and love for the sport.

A group of coaches and parents from the school awarded little ones after a successful and memorable season of school rugby.

The ceremony was aimed at inspiring them to do even better and to grow their love for the game.

Coach Tiaan de Wet said together with other dads, they decided to coach the Grade R group this year to introduce them to rugby.

“We started training in early February. It was amazing to see how these young boys develop and grow a love for the game during a few months of training. To see the excitement on each boy’s face when they run onto the field on practice days was so rewarding. As coaches we will miss this as the season of school rugby is now over,” he said.

He said they decided to give each boy child a trophy for them to remember their first year of rugby for many years.

De Wet reiterated that they also completed a course that focused on the children’s safety to keep them safe while in the field.

André van der Berg told the Alberton RECORD they started with Mark McPherson and Henry Swart with coaching.

He said they initially had 61 children that wanted to play rugby and eventually ended up with 40 kiddies that have since taken part.

“We did very well and in eight of our 10 games we participated and won, one was a draw and the other a loss. We have ended up with a strong team. I think we made a good team effort. We are even taking this further as a lot of them are following us to another rugby club where we will continue to hone their skills,” explained van der Berg.
