Samaritans receive much-deserved special awards at AGM

At least three members of the community were awarded for their selfless devotion during Alberton SPCA’s AGM on June 1.

Alberton SPCA hosted its AGM on June 1, where some locals on the SPCA committee were presented with special awards.

Awarded for their significant accomplishments were 10-year-old Kayleigh Odendaal, Lauren Martens and Christine Cornall.

The AGM shed light on the SPCA’s accomplishments and reflected on its previous projects.

Chaired by Carol Marneweck of the Alberton SPCA, she noted new staff members as well as long-standing employees and commended their youngest fundraiser, Kayleigh, who raised over R15 000, while also collecting blankets and food for the SPCA through KDogsz.

“Our fundraisers have been working hard this year. Yet it seems we are not managing to raise as much as we did in previous years. I think this is a reflection that times are tough, but our community is still managing to contribute where they can,” she said.

She said they are thankful to everyone that participates in their fundraisers, and that they have new kennels.

“We have installed drop off kennels at our premises. This helps for those times when a stray is collected in the middle of the night, or for people who want to anonymously surrender their animals. These have kindly been donated by Best Fence Boksburg,” said Marneweck.

For future projects, Marneweck said they were anticipating their new website and were looking into a Welfare Tracker, an application which sought to ensure the welfare of furry friends.

“Our SPCA will be going out into the community on a fortnightly basis, leaving a skeleton staff at the SPCA to deal with emergencies. We believe this will aid in helping the community to see the good the SPCA is doing in the community,” she said.

She also thanked the fundraising and management committee members for their continuous support.
