Operation Okae Molao conducted in New Market

Law enforcers joined hands to combat crime during the Okae Molao operation recently conducted in New Market.

Law enforcers detained several suspects during the Okae Molao Operation conducted in Heidelberg Road, New Market on May 5.

The joint operation was conducted in Ekurhuleni district from May 4 to 5, led by SAPS members and other law enforcement agencies.

Said to have yielded success, at least 235 suspects were arrested by officers who worked within the district policing precincts.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Maj-Gen Anna Sithole took the operations to Alberton SAPS in the early hours of May 5.

According to Capt Nelda Sekgobela, Ekurhuleni district communications officer, suspects were nabbed during the joint operation for numerous cases.

“At least 78 traffic fines to the value of R25 700 were issued to those who contravened Road Traffic Act and two vehicles, a Nissan NP 200 and a Toyota Quantum impounded. Three illegal shebeens closed, 11 undocumented persons arrested and five suspects arrested for possession of drugs,” she said.

A pair was nabbed for dealing in drugs, five people arrested for possession of the suspected stolen property after they were found with copper cables and one arrested for a business robbery.

Sekgobela said one person was arrested for attempted murder after he tried to fire shots at officers who were busy during the operation, however, no injuries were reported.

In support of the operation, Social Crime Prevention SAPS members and communication, together with community patrollers and GBV Brigades conducted a school search.

“At one of the secondary schools, a box of cigarettes, box of hubbly bubbly, boxes of matches and a lighter were confiscated. Members also conducted a door-to-door awareness campaign at Rondebult and Phumula to address car hijackings, murders and GBV issues,” Sekgobela said.

Among those present were SAPS members, Gauteng Traffic Police, EMPD, Home Affairs, Community Policing Forums and other local stakeholders.
