Great minds unite to empower young minds

Influential locals have joined hands to uplift youngsters through their initiative, Rebirth of the Mind.

An Alberton trio’s motto, “It takes a village to raise a child”, has proven to still be true.

Young minds will now be empowered thanks to a new initiative, Rebirth of the Mind, launched on April 30 at Jimmy’s Killer Express.

Social worker and radio personality Noluthando Moyana, local author Abram Mhlane and established entrepreneur Thembi Sambo have joined hands to launch this initiative.

The movement was prompted by a need to promote social and mental support to young minds, especially youngsters from marginalised backgrounds.

According to Moyana, through this platform, they will be shedding light on issues such as self-concept, peer pressure and identity crisis through their events.

“We have come together to put our focus on a boy child. We have lots of programmes that focus on a girl child in communities and we sort of ignore a boy child. We want to create awareness with a boy child that they also need to learn to take care of their mental health.”

They aim to debunk the concept that boys don’t cry, which puts pressure on them during their upbringing.

“This platform also reminds our boys that they still matter and that they should also report any violence that they experience. We want our boys to grow up believing in themselves and that the sky is the limit,” Moyana said.

Sambo, franchisee of Jimmy’s Killer Express, said that they will expand their services throughout the community and surrounding areas and also work with other local entities.

“We know that our children are mostly raised by single parents and fathers are nowhere to be found. We also want to create a room where there are fathers who will adopt those children and give them love. We want to go back to basics and show that a neighbour’s child is also my child,” she said.

Author of The Path of Pleasant Pains, Abram Mhlane, reiterated that this is a worldwide movement that will not only focus on a boy child but on individuals from all walks of life.
