THC Africa becomes a first for Joburg South

“The introduction and legalisation of medical cannabis have changed the industry completely.”

THC Africa is a little shop based in Glenanda that also serves as a dispensary and educational centre for users of medical cannabis.

This is the first of its type of dispensary in Africa.

Prof BD de Beer, a pioneer in the field of cannabis research and law around medical cannabis, helped THC Africa to open the Prof BD de Beer Educational in September 2021 to help with the educational part of the business.

In December 2021 they received the licence that allowed them to trade as a dispensary. The process of applying for the use of medical cannabis can also be done at THC Africa.

Medical cannabis is categorised as a section 21 medicine, which means it can be accessed with special permission, which THC Africa helps you to apply for as well.

“Our main goal is to help with education around cannabis and CBD products and how they can benefit you. In the beginning, the shop originally got backlash, but we didn’t think it will come from within the cannabis community itself.

“We have changed a few people’s outlook already on the use of cannabis through the education centre,” said CEO of THC Africa Kyle Brocklebank.

Before the dispensary could be opened, they first needed to look at the legal aspects of opening and how this would affect the company.

Brocklebank said: “Most people using our products have underlying health issues and it’s sometimes difficult for them to get cannabis that helps with the issues. Our long-term goal will be to have a dispensary in every province in South Africa within the next year.”

With different strains of cannabis helping for different issues, it is important to know what you are going to use the cannabis for.

“The introduction and legalisation of medical cannabis have changed the industry completely.

“We need to educate people on the health properties of cannabis.”
