Motorists warned of faulty traffic lights on Ring Road West and Fore Street

Motorists are advised to drive with caution and use alternative routes.

Driving in the rain can be very difficult as the heavy downpour can up the risk of road accidents due to low visibility, slippery roads and bad-tempered, impatient drivers.

The RECORD has received reports of malfunctioning traffic lights on Ring Road West and Fore Street.

According to Ward 106 councillor Tim Denny, the traffic lights are faulty and both sides remain green.

Councillor Tim said he has notified the department.

“I reported it to the Department this morning so they are aware.

It is not clear what led to the incident. Motorists have been warned to take extreme caution as they approach faulty traffic lights.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has urged motorists to adhere when treating four-way stops or traffic circles.

At a four-way stop, the vehicle that is first behind a stop sign has right of way.

This procedure also applies to a traffic light that is not working or malfunctioning.

Lerato Monyane of the EMPD reiterated that the first motorist to be at the traffic light has right of way.

“This is a clear indication that obeying these K59 rules can eliminate small mistakes that can cause a huge problem, even a fine as per NRTA 93/96 Section 64 regarding driving a motor vehicle inconsiderately. This can amount to R1 000,” she said.

In a case of a traffic circle, she said the scenario changes, the motorist on the right-hand side has right of way.
