Joburg south residents enjoy seniors’ lunch

Pensioners from all around the South of Johannesburg came together on March 16 to enjoy a pensioners' lunch and free ice cream at Mugg and Bean in Meyersdal.

A seniors’ lunch was hosted by Errol and Sharon-Ann Theron for the Pensioners Friend Alberton South.
This is their way of giving back to the pensioners and to have some fun.

Speaking to some of the pensioners, the message was clear that they are grateful to be able to socialise again.

The Therons thanked Raceview Motors, The Robinhood Foundation, Jenning Fine Foos, Rawson Properties, ATKV Amanzimtoti, Pick n Pay Brackenhurst, Mugg and Bean Meyersdal and Clicks for their support.

Errol and Sharon-Ann want to empower and entertain pensioners, and this is why they started the Pensioners Friend, a community-based NPO for pensioners by pensioners.

They previously lived in the area before relocating to Amanzimtoti in 2008, but due to circumstances moved back to Brackendowns. The Facebook pages Pensioners Friend and Pensioners Friend monthly booklet group help other pensioners find specific information about the facilities and benefits available to them.

The booklet is a community project specifically for senior citizens filled with interesting reading pieces to suit any mood and interest and includes special offers for pensioners, stories, interesting facts, jokes and games.

Booklets are printed and distributed to local outlets free of charge for all pensioners.

Cathy Storbeck, Martie Odendaal and Stanley Odendaal.

“Our booklet is easy to read on mobile devices or PCs and the sight-impaired can listen online,” said Sharon-Ann.

“It has always been our passion to create something all pensioners can enjoy and be able to assist seniors in need of advice.

“You know what, there is no cure for loneliness. We found that many pensioners are lonely and feel left behind and even hopeless sometimes, but that is why we try our best to give them hope and listen to their stories.

“There is always hope and there is someone out there who cares. You are not alone.”

Sponsors welcome

It is difficult to survive on a Sassa grant, so this is why the couple always strives to search for bargains and specials for pensioners, but they can’t do this without the help and support of the community.

“We are looking for businesses who have compassion for the elderly to join and assist us with this venture.”

Elizabeth Oosthuizen and Connie Lotter.
