Alberton CPF shares safety tips

A few saftey tips from Alberton CPF.

It is important for residents to always be aware of their surroundings, as criminals are always up to something.
Alberton CPF shared safety tips with the RECORD.

“We advise people, especially children that if you are walking in or around town, running errands or visiting family and friends to, if possible, use the buddy system and not to walk alone and to please inform your loved ones when you have arrived and when you are on your way home,” said CPF chairperson Pieter Schreiber.

To avoid having your cellphone snatched or being mugged, one must pay attention to your surroundings.

“In some instances, if you spot the threat before they can act it takes away the element of surprise and lessens the chance of an attack. You should not have your phone out and visible for long periods while walking or standing in the open.”

People must take note of strange behaviour, such as people and/or vehicles following them. In that case, contact someone immediately.

“If you are alone at home or have family or domestic workers at your house during the day, advise them not to allow any strangers in if not arranged and confirmed or in special circumstances to contact the relevant person first,” he said.

Have an emergency protocol in place for such an instance, such as a safe place to hide and call for help.

“Make sure emergency numbers are displayed or stored on your family’s and workers’ phones and, if applicable, everyone must know where the panic buttons are placed.”

Report any form of crime to your local police station, local security company or your local CPF.
