Waterstone College is ahead of the game

The school offers a variety of sports activities and believes participation plays an important role in promoting health, team-awareness, discipline and self-confidence in addition to physical and social well-being.

Waterstone College is a Curro Select school situated in Kibler Park, Johannesburg, that provides high-quality independent education for learners from 2 years to Grade 12. The school offers a variety of sports activities and believes participation plays an important role in promoting health, team-awareness, discipline and self-confidence in addition to physical and social well-being. This year their ultimate goal is to have as many learners possible take part in as many sports activities as possible.

They aim to achieve this goal by promoting the principles and values upon which their sports structure is built. The staff and learners pride themselves on upholding the values of pride, passion, power, positivity, manners and faith. Waterstone College continuously strives to create equal opportunities for all learners in an environment where discipline, professionalism, leadership skills and safety on the sports field are taught. This helps to ensure that learners develop their sporting talents to the best of their abilities while being good sportsmen and sportswomen.

Waterstone College does have the ‘normal’ sports activities available and these include athletics, chess, cricket, cross-country, soccer, hockey, netball, tennis and rugby sevens. However, in addition to these, the school also offers some more specialised activities that are not available at ‘just any school’. These activities include badminton, golf and mountain biking.

The school has recently also introduced eSports as an official sports activity.  This is particularly timely as many traditional sports activities have had to be curtailed to some extent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a great need for activities where learners can compete in a safe environment, and eSports is the answer. Parents who are hesitant to have their children take part in online gaming can now rest assured – Waterstone College provides a safe and controlled environment wherein learners can compete.

With so many excellent activities on offer it’s no wonder that many learners wish to participate in more than one. Since the learners’ needs are what drives this school, the team has decided to adapt their current extramural programme to allow for more time slots throughout the week – meaning learners can now partake in multiple activities if they wish to do so. This initiative is sure to encourage more learners to take part in different sports activities in the future.

With the ease on the current lockdown restrictions and everyone allowed to be out and about a bit more, Waterstone College plans on hosting a variety of festivals, tournaments and competitions throughout the year – creating opportunities for learners to shine in various areas of sport.
