WATCH: Five ‘burnt beyond recognition’ on Swartkoppies, Kliprivier Roads crash

The driver and assistant in the fuel tanker were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

Emergency services from both Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni responded to a severe accident on the corner of Swartkoppies and Kliprivier Roads late on February 2.

According to William Ntladi spokesperson for EMS, a light motor vehicle and a fuel tanker collided causing the tanker’s cargo to catch fire.

“The dice occupants of the light motor vehicle were declared dead on the scene and were burned beyond recognition,” said Ntladi.

The driver and assistant in the fuel tanker were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

There are around 50 firefighters attending to the scene with six fire engines from Ekurhuleni and five from Johannesburg who managed to extinguish the blaze with assistance from specialised vehicles.

Police are still investigating the scene of the accident and Swartkoppies road will remain closed until the investigation can be completed.

Ntladi said that EMS foresees an increase in serious accidents due to the easing of restrictions and load-shedding.

“We ask residents to please drive carefully and be aware of their surroundings,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi updated the RECORD this morning that the fuel tanker is still not removed from the scene, only two light motor vehicles are removed thus far.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
