Multiple shootings at Eikenhoff Taxi Rank

At the time of publication it’s not yet clear how many victims were on the scene.

Three people were injured in two separate shootings, on January 14 and 17, since the recent wave of taxi violence at the Eikenhoff Taxi Rank.

On January 14, members of Mondeor SAPS responded to calls about a shooting incident at the taxi rank.

Capt Lunga Dube, spokesperson for Mondeor SAPS, said, “Unknown males fired several shots towards two vehicles. They fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla Quest and a silver Hyundai. Mondeor SAPS officers followed up on information that led to one male being arrested in connection with the incident.

“The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with live ammunition. He is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as attempted murder. The suspect was detained at Mondeor SAPS and appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on January 17.”

On January 17, three victims were injured when a shooter opened fire at the taxi rank.

According to Russel Meiring, communications officer for ER24, a male in his 40s was shot and transported to hospital.

Meiring said, “Medics assessed the man and found he had sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, leaving him in a serious condition. The man was treated and provided with pain-relief medication before being transported to a provincial hospital for further care. Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.”

Mondeor CPF chairperson Mike Fontes said, “This morning (January 17) taxi drivers were shot and wounded in an incident in Eikenhoff. This is part of a broader dispute between the Faraday Taxi Association and the Meyerton Taxi Association, which has over the last few months seen sporadic violence and shootings in the Eikenhoff area.

The SAPS Provincial Taxi Violence Unit has been called in to investigate and try and resolve the dispute.”

Prior to these two incidents, a taxi driver was shot and killed at the rank in November 2021.

The CHRONICLE has approached the NPA and SAPS for comment and more information.

This is a developing story and will be updated as a comment is received.
