Baby Eden kidnapping trial to begin in May

Kidnappers reappeared in court on January 18.

The five suspects involved in the kidnapping of Eden Laird when he was 13 months old will stand for trial from May 9 to May 20.

They reappeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on January 18.

Due to conflict with many diaries as there are several people to consider, including more than one defence attorney, the prosecutor, the court itself and the translator, it was pushed out as dates for March were initially considered.

Cleopatra Manjankozi (domestic worker), Kholwani Nyathi, Amos Moyo, Maduna Nonkanyiso and Nelisini Gabela are facing charges of schedule six kidnapping and blackmail.

Eden was reported missing on May 2, 2018.

The suspects demanded a R6-million ransom for the baby’s safe return.

Police set up a sting operation, which led to Eden being found in Windmill Park near Boksburg during that weekend and he was safely home with his parents on May 5.

The suspects’ first court appearance was on May 7, 2018.
