Glenanda gun shop fire death toll rises to five

The Glenanda gun shop fire's death toll has risen to five after one more person succumbed to his injuries.

The critically injured patient who was transported to Netcare Union Hospital for urgent care has succumbed to his injuries following a fire at Silva Arm’s shop due to an unconfirmed explosion at about 10:55 on October 29.

The Glenanda Shopping Centre manager, Brenda Goldswain confirmed the passing of the fifth person.

“Sadly, we can confirm that the fifth person passed away at Union Hospital from his injuries bringing the death toll from today’s tragedy to 5.”

“Our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends on the loss of their loved ones. Today is indeed a sad day in the life of our Centre.”

“Witnesses report hearing an explosion followed by fire emanating from the gun shop followed by live rounds going off. At this stage Centre Management cannot comment on the cause of the tragedy based on speculation until a thorough forensic investigation has been completed,” she said.

The details surrounding this incident are still unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
