Union Rugby club in full swing

The Memorial Shield League kicked off the season after taking time off due to the pandemic.

The Memorial Shield League kicked off on September 11 with Union playing home against Inner City.

“The first side won convincingly 51-0 in a one-way game whereby tries were scored at will. The forwards were dominating the game and laying a platform for the backline to score beautiful worked tries,” said Union Rugby Club manager Jason du Toit.

“The second side played in a friendly against Heidelberg and won convincingly 28-10. This was a good performance by the players, especially having several new faces in the team,” said du Toit.

On September 18, the first side went down against log leaders Khoza from the West Rand. Khoza arrived with a very strong team and blitzed the first side in the first 15 minutes. The guys worked hard to recover and showed moments of brilliance but just could not get going.

“The second side played to a 0-0 draw against first league club Raiders’ second side. The guys tackled like demons on the day and there was not an inch given between the two sides.

“On September 22, the club played against Diggers. The second side played to another 10 all draw and remains the only unbeaten team in the club at the moment,” he said.

Du Toit said the first side went down 22-14 after clawing back from being 17-0 down at halftime.

“The guys brought out the bulldog in them the second half and showed that we can play running and attractive rugby when we get going. The coaches have been working hard on the fitness and this is starting to show in the games.

“The club cannot point out any players at the moment as all the players have been working hard for the club on and off the field. The club is starting to come back together and the Union brand will be making its mark soon,” du Toit said.

Union will play every Saturday going forward until November 6.

Practice takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 18:30 sharp at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre, Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park. For more information, contact Jason on 082 850 1344.
