WATCH: Survivors of domestic violence receive care packs

Amcare, a haven for victims of abuse, received care packs from Gauteng Department of Social Development and Motsepe Foundation on August 31.

As Women’s Month comes to a close, Gauteng Department of Social Development and Motsepe Foundation handed over care packs to survivors of domestic violence at Amcare on August 31.

While strongly advocating against gender-based violence (GBV), representatives from about 23 GBV shelters in the province were also presented with packs.

The event was attended by dignitaries, who included MEC for Social Development Morakane Mosupyoe and Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu.

The dignitaries also did a walkabout at Amcare and engaged with survivors.

Mosupyoe said the donations will form part of the Women’s Month activations and that the event was a time to review how women and children are coping in shelters during this difficult time brought on by the pandemic.

“African Fashion International at the beginning of 2021 contributed to the government-led Gender-based Violence and Femicide Fund and committed to provide in-kind support towards the GBV centres,” she said.

Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe of Motsepe Foundation and Africa Fashion International (AFI) said the donation was made to improve their health, wellness, comfort and dignity.

“As we commemorate Women’s Month during the pandemic, we extend our support to the 23 GBV shelters in Gauteng by donating basic personal care products, PPE, resource booklets to make a difference in the lives of the women at these centres,” she said.

Zulu reiterated that the government should create a conducive environment for women and girls.

Amcare’s Thembi Maduma expressed her gratitude after receiving the 20 care packs for the shelter.

She told the RECORD the care packs will be given to those who seek assistance at the shelter.
