Alberton police launch manhunt following killing of three people

Alberton police are investigating a shooting incident where a man was critically injured and three others killed on the N3 north near the N17 split just before the Rand Airport bridge on August 15.

According to the communications officer of Alberton SAPS, Capt Manare Ramotshela, they received a call at around 21:00 on August 15 about the incident and upon their arrival, they found four victims in a white Toyota Etios.

According to Russel Meiring, ER24 communications officer, ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 21:30 to find the local authorities and AfriForum first-aiders already there.

Local authorities had already closed the highway and diverted traffic.

“On the scene, a light motor vehicle was found against the barriers in the fast lane. Two men were found inside the vehicle, while another was found lying outside. A fourth man was found on the opposite side of the road,” said Meiring.

Medics assessed the men and found the two inside the car had already succumbed to their numerous gunshot wounds.

“Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead. The two other men were in critical conditions,” Meiring added.

“Medics treated the two and provided them with advanced life support. Once treated, the men were transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Unfortunately, one of the critically injured men succumbed to his injuries at hospital,” said Meiring.

Capt Kay Makhubele, the Gauteng police spokesperson, said the vehicle, which collided with the barriers had several bullet holes and the back window was broken.

According to him, a passenger on the scene told officers they were travelling from Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg.

The witness said they were ambushed by occupants of a white sedan.

“The motive of the shooting is unknown,” said Makhubele.

“Alberton police are asking for help from the community to assist with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects,” said Ramotshela.
