Katlehong suspects arrested for defamation of character

The suspects published nude photos of their partners on Facebook after alleged breakups.

Katlehong North SAPS warns social media users to be careful with the content they post on social media platforms.

This follows at least three cases of defamation of character recently reported at the station.

Katlehong North SAPS media liaison officer Capt Lesetja Mathobela told Kathorus MAIL they are investigating cases of defamation of character after three individual suspects allegedly posted nude photographs and videos of their partners on social media.

Mathobela confirmed the arrest of two male suspects from Nhlapo Section in Katlehong.

The suspects published nude photos of their partners on Facebook after alleged breakups.

The third case is being investigated.

Mathobela shared safety tips with the public regarding social media:

• Avoid sharing nude photographs or videos of yourself, your partner or your friends without their consent. It is a criminal offence to infringe on other people’s rights to privacy. Do not fall into this criminal trap.

• Do not publish nude photographs and videos to the public without the other party’s consent.

• Avoid sharing personal information on social media.

• Do not advertise your private life, your prized belongings or material on social media.

• The comments you get are not always a true reflection of how people feel about you. Keep your location private to avoid people tracing your movements.

The Katlehong North SAPS station commander, Col Raymond Buthelezi, urged the community to stop such behaviour and accept when the relationship has ended.

Buthelezi encouraged the community to respect and protect women, as the country is fighting the scourge of gender-based violence.
