Local raises concerns on Brackenhurst Clinic

The City of Ekurhuleni has responded to complaints against Brackenhurst Clinic.

On June 29, I arranged transport to attend an appointment for myself and my epileptic son’s collection of our chronic medication.

On arrival, the clinic was deserted, with only security and a few people at the back of the premises not wearing masks.

I was subsequently told the clinic had closed due to a Covid-19 infection. Surely, some sort of notice should be displayed and alternative measures have been put in place for us to collect our medication elsewhere?

Once again, no consideration and communication from Brackenhurst Clinic.

I fully understand the seriousness of the Covid-19 virus and the steps that need to be taken for the safety of all our people.

CoE’s response

In response, City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said on June 29 the Brackenhurst Clinic was closed because a rapid Covid-19 test done on a critically patient was positive.

“The client was taken to the emergency room and attended to by more than one professional nurse.

“The Brackenhurst Clinic is very small and it would not be efficient to barricade one area for decontamination; hence, it was decided the clinic should be closed,” he said.

He said a notice was placed at the clinic that indicated the clinic was closed and waiting for decontamination.

“The common practice is to communicate the information to the community around the catchment area of the clinic. The services resume immediately after decontamination. The clinic was decontaminated on June 30 and services resumed on July 1,” said Dlamini.

He told the RECORD the reason for the two-day delay was because there were several municipal buildings that required decontamination in the same period.

“The security personnel at the entrance of the clinic were instructed to inform the community or patients about the reason for the closure of the Brackenhurst Clinic,” he said.
