#SAunrest: Death toll rises to 212, N2 & N3 open

Despite the increase in deaths, government says the situation has been “fully stabilised” and announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa would address the nation tonight (July 16).

Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni addressed the media this afternoon to give an update on the unrest that took hold of some parts of the country.

Nsthavheni confirmed that major economic routes are open, this includes the N2 and N3 for transportation of key food stuffs, medical supplies and fuel and this, she said, would abate shortages.

Further to this, the acting minister also confirmed the following:

  • There have been recorded recoveries of ammunition that were in several suspects’ possession in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Sanral is repairing parts of the highway along Mooiriver that was damaged due to the unrest, with traffic following along the N3.
  • Government has engaged with key role-players to restore and rebuild the economy, open businesses and minimise the loss of jobs and is working on restoring investor confidence.
  • The Department of Trade and Industry and Competition has set up an email address (ioc@thedtic.gov.za) where companies can report potential, imminent and actual looting taking place at establishments.
  • Law enforcement officers are recovering stolen property daily. Police continue to receive tip-offs in this regard.
  • A community leader was arrested in the West Rand (Gauteng) for allegedly recording and distributing a voicenote calling for public violence in the area.
  • Government will not tolerate lawlessness and, along with asking social media users to use platforms responsibly (by not inciting violence or asking for areas to be shut down), is urging citizens to remain true to the spirit of the South African constitution.
  • Some provinces have resumed the Covid-19 vaccination roll-out, with those above the age of 35 now also being vaccinated.
  • The situation is fully stabilised, this according to Nsthavheni.

The acting minister also confirmed police are investigating the possible instigators of the unrest but said no further comment would be given on the matter as it would jeopardise investigations.
