Southgate Mall closes its doors as a precaution against the violent protests and looting.

While businesses, gyms and restaurants across the country were given the go-ahead to operate under level-4 restrictions, Southgate Mall has been forced to close on Monday, July 12 due to continuous violent protests and looting in Gauteng.

The mall’s marketing manager, Jirisha Naicker confirmed that due to the current protests, the tenants have decided to close as a precaution.

“As such, the Mall and associated entrances are currently closed to ensure the safety of our tenants and patrons.”

“The safety and security of shoppers and tenants continue to be of utmost importance to Southgate Mall Centre Management'” said Naicker.

President Ramaphosa addressed the sporadic yet increasingly violent protests seen in parts of the country in the past few days.

Key infrastructure like national roads have been affected, slowing down the transportation of goods and services that keep the economy running.

“These acts are endangering lives and damaging our efforts to rebuild the economy,” Ramaphosa said.
