Orlando Stadium to host CBL Cup

“The Orlando Stadium also provides the perfect backdrop for the Soweto Derby.”

Soweto sports fans are in for a treat this winter as two major sporting events are scheduled to take place in the historic township located in the heart of the City of Gold.

Carling Black Label (CBL), alongside the two Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, as well as stadium management, has decided to move the CBL Cup to the Orlando Stadium for the very first time since the cup’s inception in 2011.

Having played at the infamous calabash FNB Stadium for the past decade, the stakeholders saw an opportunity to commemorate the success of the cup through the years by hosting the match at a venue that is a stone’s throw away from where both teams originate.

The venue change will see stablemate Castle Lager host the British Irish Lions series match between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions on July 31, while the CBL Cup match will be moved to August 1 to a 17:00 kick-off.

Thus, ensuring South Africans will be rewarded with an action-packed weekend of the best sporting entertainment.

“Although we would have loved to have champion voices in-stadia to witness the very first Carling Black Label Cup at the spectacular Orlando Stadium, we will ensure viewers have a memorable experience from the comfort of their homes.

“The Orlando Stadium also provides the perfect backdrop for the Soweto Derby. Furthermore, we believe this change of venue will only affect the fan experience positively,” said CBL brand director Arné Rust.

The past eight CBL Cup clashes between the Soweto Giants have been played to a sold-out FNB Stadium with five victories for Orlando Pirates in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2019, closely followed by their rivals Kaizer Chiefs with three wins in 2013, 2016 and 2017.
