Suspect caught red-handed with ivory in Alberton

A suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of two elephant tusks in Alberton on May 3.

The suspect was arrested on Heidelberg Road.

ā€œCrime intelligence members received information about a person who would be transporting elephant tusks,ā€ said Capt Mavelo Masonda, spokesperson for the Gauteng SAPS.

ā€œInformation was conveyed to a team comprising the Johannesburg Flying Squad, JMPD and Fidelity Specialised Services who stopped the suspect at Heidelberg Road in Alberton.ā€

Upon searching the vehicle and suspect, the team reportedly found two elephant tusks. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of ivory.

The suspect recently appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

The directorate for Priority Crime Investigation will investigate further to establish the origin of the ivory and the possibility of other suspects involved.
