Tragedy hits Broken Wings

After years of service, Broken Wings Association for Adults with Disabilities has reported its second break-in, which is suspected to have occurred between February 15 and 17.

During a time where the NPO desperately needs financial assistance, it has suffered a loss worth R5 000 after intruders broke into its facility.

After years of service, Broken Wings Association for Adults with Disabilities has reported its second break-in, which is suspected to have occurred between February 15 and 17.

According to the organisation’s acting manager, Trudy Webb, this was a second incident after intruders trespassed in December 2019.

“While coming into the facility to have a look at things, I discovered people had broken in and there was a lot of damage to the place. They broke down the back sliding door and seemed so professional they first switched off the main power switch,” she said.

The intruders reportedly stole a stack of cleaning material, sanitising products, table cloths, a toaster and a computer screen.

She also said they broke the safe out of the wall, but fortunately, the safe did not have any money in it.
A distressed Sheryl Swanepoel, fund-raiser at Broken Wings, confirmed that a case has been opened with Alberton SAPS after the ordeal.

“I thank True Lubricants and SOG security for their assistance following the incident, they helped greatly, especially in maintaining safety measures. We opened on March 1 and we are still trying to get back on our feet and we would appreciate any assistance from the community,” said Swanepoel.

She also announced they cater for at least nine ‘broken wingers’ and they still have enough space to house the disabled.
