Fraudster caught by EMPD in Newmarket

A suspect was apprehended after trying to fraudulently acquire credit cards.

EMPD Intervention Unit Officers arrested a male suspect who had two false bank cards in Newmarket.

EMPD officers on patrol were approached at 1.10pm by members of the fraud division of a local bank in need of back-up.

They alleged that a suspicious customer inside their bank was attempting to collect two new credit cards loaded with R100 000 each that were not in his name.

When the activation and administration were finalised in the bank, the suspect who was about to leave the premises was cornered, handcuffed and taken to the Alberton Police Station.

Officers confiscated two credit cards and two identity documents, which were found to have mismatched names and photographs.

Two payslips from a well-known platinum mine company not belonging to the culprit were also confiscated.
