WATCH: City’s Environmental department creates employment to about 100 people

The clean-up project has reportedly created employment for about 100 people from different parts across CoE.

In an aim to bring investors to Ekurhuleni, MMC for Environment and Waste Management Khosi Mabaso introduced a clean-up project on November 16.

Mabaso announced the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) pilot project on behalf of her department, which was initially implemented on November 1 in Germiston. The project, which will reportedly run for three years, is targeted at keeping the CBD and industrial areas clean, specifically in Alberton and Germiston.

Project will bring business

The MMC was adamant that the clean-up project will assist in bringing businesses to invest in the Alberton CBD.

“We have taken an initiative as a department to have service providers clean at night. This is simply to keep our areas clean. We are looking at a bigger picture of keeping Ekurhuleni clean.

“We have decided to look at various ways of how best we can implement this project,” she said.

According to Mabaso, this will bring in revenue to the City, which would have been collected from new businesses in the area.

“We have appointed companies to clean these CBDs and nearby industrial areas at night. This is done at night because during the day it becomes difficult to work because there’s a lot of movement. We have also created a lot of jobs with this project,” said Mabaso.

On a normal night, the group of workers sweeps streets, picks up litter and empties bins.

Growth

The MMC also pointed out that they are looking at expanding such clean-up efforts in other parts of CoE.

“We are still going to deal with other areas, but we felt the key point is these areas. “As we have started with Alberton and Germiston, we would also like to reach out to other CBDs in Ekurhuleni. After this, we might go to Kempton Park or Boksburg, but we will decide over time,” said Mabaso.

“Instead of sweeping streets, we want them to buy blowers because those devices help to keep the area extremely clean. We have tested the blowers.”

Cleanliness

She told the RECORD the state of cleanliness in Alberton needed much attention.

“We discovered there are shops around Alberton who dump their peels and litter.”

She reiterated they wanted to keep CoE customers happy at the same time, ensuring investors come on board to invest in a clean area.
