Beware of a current tender scam – City warns

The City of Ekurhuleni warns the public to beware of an ongoing tender scam reportedly done by a person claiming to be an employee of the CoE.

The solid and toxic waste removal tender scam is for the removal, cleaning and rehabilitation of illegally dumped non-toxic, non-objectionable solid waste and rubble. This comes after numerous complaints from service providers who received calls from the scammer asking them for money to supposedly fast track their tender application.

According to the City’s spokesperson, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, the scammer lures applicants to a meeting with an aim to discuss their tender application.

“The scammer then recites their personal information contained in their applications to gain their trust. The City informs all tender applicants that applications for the removal, cleaning and rehabilitation of illegally dumped non-toxic, non-objectionable solid waste and rubble on an as-and-when required basis are handled and processed free of charge,” he said.

Cebekhulu outlined pointers provided to assist in differentiating scammers from legit communication by the City.
He said the name of the City is City of Ekurhuleni, not Ekurhuleni Municipality and that landlines in the City have the 999 prefix.

He also stated that the email address for staff is a person’s name.surname@ekurhuleni.gov.za and not XXX@ekurhuleni-gov.org or any other variation.

The CoE urges companies and individuals to be vigilant and to verify information on the website on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za
