Municipal maintenance to be done

Councillor Malcolm Maifala joined the RECORD on a tour of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns.

These areas fall under Ward 38.

The first stop was the burnt down reservists office of the Brackendowns Police Station. The building, ravished by fire in April 2019, has since stood ruined.

According to Maifala, the police station is situated on ground that belongs to council.

The repair of the reservist’s office therefore possibly falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality.  He said he sees two ways forward for the station. Either that the council gives them the ground it is built on or for the station to be relocated and the premises be repurposed as something else.

Several of the roads within the ward are in serious need of resurfacing. According to Maifala, this was previously placed on the IDP budget but has since been removed as this is considered to be part of the basic maintenance within the ward.

Following a heavy hail and rainstorm in April 2019 that caused severe damage to homeowners on Renonkel Street, the municipality dug two trenches to help prevent this level of damage from reoccurring.

These trenches have, however, now become overgrown with vegetation. According to Maifala, he plans to notify the relevant departments to address the issue.

This patch of vegetation is actually the trench meant to help prevent flooding.
Streets in Brackendowns are in dire need of resurfacing.
