R59 recyclers left devastated after recycling material gets taken away

A group of recyclers that has set up residence off the R59 close to the Swartkoppies off-ramp is left in devastation and in a state of panic.

This is after they informed the RECORD that their recycling material, which is reportedly worth anything from R4 000 to R6 000, was allegedly removed.

The group said that members of the EMPD paid them a visit on October 5.

Upon their visit, they told the RECORD that the EMPD used TLB machinery and a truck to get rid of their material which they had gathered for months.

Lerato Phamotse (24) said he desperately needed the money which he could’ve made from his recycling material.

“It took me at least two months to gather this and it was worth R4 000. I need the money to support my one-year-old child. They asked us to leave but we don’t even know where to go to,” he said.

He said this will also have a crippling effect on the families welfare.

The RECORD has since requested comment from the EMPD and response will be provided once available.
