Ex-ANC MP, Vincent Smith faces charges of corruption

Vincent Smith, who is facing charges of corruption and fraud, received bail of R30 000.

Vincent Smith, former ANC member of parliament, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on October 1 facing charges of corruption and fraud.

This follows him handing himself over to the police at Alberton Police Station earlier that morning.

The corruption charges follow testimony heard by the commission investigating state capture led by Raymond Zondo, linking Smith to Bosasa. During his appearance before the commission Smith testified regarding a loan from Bosasa totalling more than R600 000.

During his court appearance, Smith appealed to the court to grant him bail.

In his applications he indicated that he is not a flight risk, gave the court information about his current residence in Roodepoort and offered to hand in all travel documents. The state did not oppose the bail application but did ask the court to bar Smith from speaking to any of the potential witnesses that could testify for the state in the case, which the defence accepted as a stipulation.

In his affidavit, Smith indicated his intention to plead innocent and further believed the state has no information that can be brought to implicate him of the crimes of which he has been accused.

Bail of R30 000 was granted to Smith. He is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court again on October 14.
