Discrepancies in EMPD armory audit

Three different investigations into the the EMPD armory delivered three different versions of the amount of missing firearms.

In a report delivered in February by councillor Frans Mmoko, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community, the Public Protector agreed that a total of 48 firearms had been reported stolen or lost.

The police minister, Bheki Cele, indicated that 334 firearms were stolen and a further 103 were lost from the EMPD armory.

In July 2019, the DA, which was then in possession of the highly sensitive EMPD armory, published different numbers regarding the amount of firearms missing.

They reported that 382 firearms had been reported missing or stolen and that a further 357 were unaccounted for.
In reply to a request for comment regarding this from EMPD, it indicated that this matter was not handled internally but rather by government and that questions regarding it should be addressed to them.

The RECORD requested comment from the City of Ekurhuleni regarding the discrepancies but no comment was received.
