Cubs, Scouts and Lions making a difference

The challenge was simple enough, fill jars or bags with dry ingredients and this will feed a family of four.

The Scouts honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by giving at least 67 minutes of their time for Mandela Day on July 18 every year.

This year was no different and they received an email from the Gauteng regional commissioner, Angus Hay, alerting them to a national Scout Mandela Day initiative called Jar of Hope or Bag of Hope.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has left many families in our communities without a source of income in the middle of a particularly cold winter.

The challenge was simple enough, fill jars or bags with dry ingredients and this will feed a family of four.
The Scouts immediately shared the information with the first Brackenhurst Scouting family and were very pleased with the result.

Thirteen families took up the challenge and 104 Jars / Bags of Hope were made. Adhering to current social distancing regulations, they set aside time for parents to drop off their donations outside the Scout hall in Poppy Street.

Thanks to a successful partnership with the Alberton Lions Club, the donation was handed over on Mandela Day and would be included in food parcels for families in need.

The Scouts are looking forward to further collaborations between themselves and the Alberton Lions Club in the future.
