Tribute to the first principal of Frances Vorwerg School

“Frances Vorwerg school is a place I worked at and contributed with dedication all in the interest of the special child.”

July 1 was indeed a very sad day for Frances Vorwerg School with the passing of the school’s first and beloved principal, GP van den Berg.

Van den Berg was appointed in February 1971 as the principal at the premises in Crown Mines.

In 1972 the school had grown to 60 learners and 22 staff members. New premises were identified in 1977 with the new school opening in November 1979 in Haddon.

In September 1986 he retired after 16 years of service to Frances Vorwerg School.

The school looks back on the excellent and dedicated leadership of uncle Gerrie, as he was known to former learners, staff and the community. He truly left a great legacy behind.

As he mentioned at a stage, “Frances Vorwerg School is a place I worked at and contributed with dedication all in the interest of the special child.”

The staff still had contact with their beloved principal until his sudden death. His passing is deeply mourned.
The staff and children sent there sincerest condolences to his wife, children and grandchildren.
