WATCH: Mayberry Park’s job seekers receive food hampers

Job seekers who station themselves at the traffic lights of JG Strijdom Road had their hands full as they received food hampers on July 5.

Job seekers who station themselves at the traffic lights of JG Strijdom Road recently received food hampers.

This is after Akhona Maserumule, who moved to the area four years ago, took it upon herself to donate the food hampers.

The hampers contained maize meal, rice, a large portion of sugar, cooking oil and tinned fish. Maserumule said she was inspired by her church leader Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s teachings.

“Our leader mentors us about the principle of giving, and that giving opens doors for you. I believe the more you give, the more God opens up doors for you because you are taking care of His people,” she said.

In April she also took to the streets to donate loaves of bread to job seekers in parts of Mayberry Park.
She did this after reaching out to friends and family, who then assisted her financially to go on a mission of changing lives with the little that she had.

“When I first moved here, I saw the area as being modern, except I noticed it had lots of job seekers who would sit the whole day at traffic lights. This touched my heart deeply because I’m very passionate about giving,” said Maserumule.

Some mornings while jogging, she would also see this group stationed at different parts of Mayberry Park and had a burning desire to lend a hand.

Lockdown hits hard

She told the RECORD that she then saw a need to donate after the national lockdown kicked in.

“I realised that people were struggling with winter on the doorstep and trying to find work yet they are hungry. I figured that since I’m not using much petrol to go to work, I might as well use that money to do something for the jobless,” she said.

She said not only has Covid-19 and the national lockdown affected the working class, but job seekers have also been hit hard.

She appealed to the community for any form of donations in order to help other neighbouring communities.
