The gifted musician, songwriter, and producer sings country, pop, and rock music in English and Afrikaans.

At only 21, he has over six years of experience in the music industry and has his own music recording studio.
Eugene Nel realised his passion for music at age 12, when he got his first guitar.

By seeing a bigger picture, Eugene’s fondness for music grew even more. He was then inspired to focus more on music after seeing one of his friends perform at a school function. It was not long after discovering his skill for music and his special attention to detail that his parents sent him for lessons.

“In Grade Nine I started my singing career. I joined the choir and from there I continued with singing. I feel I still have a lot to learn and I’m ready to go deep into the industry. I love performing. I actually want to perform for the rest of my life,” he said.

To date, he has digitally released two songs – Fotoraam and Die Beste Verskil. His songs have been well received and are making waves on social media platforms. He is working on another song titled Boer Genoeg, which is yet to be released.

Skill set

The music fanatic is a self-taught drummer and is working on grade three of his piano lessons.

“My vocal teacher told me it was not worth it to go for lessons because my experience level is already at grade seven. After some time, she said there was nothing she can teach me anymore. I have realised over the years of writing songs that there is so much more apart from love songs that one can write about,” said Eugene.

As it stands, the passionate youngster has composed at least 100 of his own songs.

“I’m often approached by artists who want to record songs for their own portfolios or for someone as a gift. I then sometimes end up writing the songs for them, which also leads up to the composition and production of the song,” he said.

Multitalented

Eugene has also had the privilege to open for Jakkie Louw, where he performed for many.

Apart from performing at school functions, he has also performed at restaurants, old age homes and in shows.
He is a third-year sound engineering student at the Academy of Sound Engineering.

Not only does he grace his audiences with his golden voice, he also puts his sound engineering skills into good practise by facilitating sound at corporate events.

About this and that

If he is not recording his music, his time is mostly taken up by researching everything there is in music and electronics.

He also thanked and commended the support he receives from his family.

“You get a lot of artists who struggle with getting support from their families. They would expect them to be doctors and lawyers, but my father fully supported me. After completing a song, my father would take time and listen to it,” he said.

He advised aspirant artists to begin with following their passion in music immediately after discovering their love for it. His biggest wish is to one day be signed by a major recording label.

Fotoraam will be featured on kykNET on June 27 between 7pm to 7.30pm.
