Silwerkroon residents go an extra mile at making a difference

In a project that started a year ago and led by Salome Teixeira, the trio crochets beautifully crafted beanies that are donated to organisations.

With winter upon us, a group of Silwerkroon residents have taken it upon themselves to keep people’s heads warm.
In a project that started a year ago, Salome Teixeira, Janet van der Merwe and Joey Lategan crochet colourful beanies which are donated to organisations.

Initially, they would donate the beanies to a Brakpan Evangelical Reformed Church. The congregation would then donate the beanies to the homeless residing in Brakpan.

The trio recently started donating the beanies to Helping Hand and Amcare. To date, they have made at least 450 beanies which will be donated to these organisations respectively. Salome Teixeira, leader of the group, said they do this because of the love they have for crocheting.

“We are self-taught and we only do this for the love of it and to also make a difference to our community in any way possible. We knit all patterns from our heads and we don’t follow any design but it comes naturally,” she said.

Teixeira told the RECORD that their work has many other benefits.

“This helps a lot because not only are you making a difference to others, but crocheting also helps keep our brains active. It helps to stimulate the mind and helps get your mind off things. In a day, depending on what we will be doing in between, we make about three beanies,” she said.

To help these seniors continue making a difference, you may donate wool or any form of donations. Contact Salome Teixeira on 082 685 0851.
