Following the Department of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshega’s announcement, Alberton High School’s Grade 12 learners returned to school on June 8.
It was mixed emotions for learners after being at home for months due to lockdown. Before gaining entrance, learners queued in an orderly manner while observing social distancing and also had their temperature measured.
This was said to be the new norm as per health regulations.

The school’s principal, Jannie Olivier, said that their first day consisted of a thorough orientation programme.
“We had about a 90 per cent plus attendance on the first day. With other grades soon to come back, we will have two lines and we will keep using one entrance,” he said.
Olivier said each classroom will consist of a limited number of learners and that they will continue with their online learning platforms. Justice Zikalala, head boy, confidently said he was ready to tackle the rest of the academic year despite being a little nervous.
“It was challenging having to learn during lockdown since there was no teacher to guide you. It was quite a journey for me since I had to push myself, but I kept at it. “The school also helped us with online learning,” he said.

Sibongile Khathide, a parent at the school, said she was satisfied with the readiness of the school.
“After the school sent us videos and pictures on social media I was ensured of its readiness. I am glad they reopened because my daughter had missed school terribly,” she said.
