WAS Foundation visits Alberton North’s informal settlement

We’re Against Starvation (WAS) Foundation volunteers donated food parcels to the residents of Alberton North’s informal settlement on May 31.

The non-profit organisation was founded by Esmarelda van Zyl, whose mission is to create a safe place for families and children. Through the NPO, they also ensure that no one goes to bed hungry or cold and that people are treated with love and care.

On the day, the WAS Foundation volunteers teamed up to donate about 55 food parcels, while children were treated to a variety of sweets. Each food parcel contained sugar, oil, baked beans, rice and tea bags. They were also assisted by Alberton SAPS who facilitated the handover and ensured order.

According to Christa Haumann, a WAS Foundation volunteer, this was not their first visit to the informal settlement.

“We visit the place every Sunday with prepared meals for the people. In the last few weeks it’s been difficult to do so since being faced with lockdown regulations. We also visited other informal settlements as well as orphanage homes,” she said.

They appealed to the community to assist with any form of donations, from clothes to food.
