DA rejects salary increase for full-time councillors in Ekurhuleni

"By approving a four per cent increase, the CoE missed an opportunity for its executive to show compassionate leadership." - Clr Malcolm Maifala - DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) rejected salary increases for all full-time councillors in the City.

“While the DA supports a salary increase of four per cent for part-time councillors, we strongly believe the ANC and its coalition partners have displayed an image of an uncaring government which only looks after its own needs.
“It is disappointing that the ANC-led coalition council used its majority to protect the interest of the few, at the expense of the many residents facing an untold hardship.

“It is estimated that between 150 000 and 200 000 residents of Ekurhuleni are likely to lose their jobs because of the irrationally extended lockdown. “By approving a four per cent increase, the CoE missed an opportunity for its executive to show compassionate leadership.

“It is important to note that a four per cent increase for part-time councillors is welcome. This is considering that in most cases these are the councillors at the forefront of fielding service delivery queries by the residents.

“This decision by council displays yet another missed opportunity by the ANC-led coalition government to put the needs of residents above their own.

“The DA remains committed to promoting good governance and building one South Africa for all.”

Note: Part-time councillors earn less than R600 000 a year.

Full-time councillors all earn more than R1-million per annum.

Issued by councillor Malcolm Maifala, DA spokesperson: public participation and petitions.
