Creating jobs through masks

It is never too late to make a change in someone’s life.

Denise de Witt (77) from Renaissance Retirement Home in Glenvista has helped over 20 women from the South by organising them to make masks and earn a living during lockdown.

These are women who would have been at home earning nothing. However, through Denise’s intervention, they are now able to earn something. Their combined force is helping them to earn an income.

“My daughter, Renay Tangy, encouraged me to do what I’m doing. I was just sewing clothes for my granddaughter. Then came lockdown and I was making face masks. My daughter put it on social media. You can’t believe the response I got from people. I was inundated with calls from people who want masks,” explained Denise.

She remembered queuing for more than six hours with other women to buy the material for the masks. “I thought to myself I should have asked them to join me in making masks, but I didn’t at the time,” she said.

It is never too late to make a change in someone’s life. Women from parts of the South loved what she was doing and they joined her in making the masks, Now Denise delivers the material to these women and in turn, they manufacture masks. She then collects the final product to sell it.

She has a coordinator who makes sure everything runs smoothly.

“The more we sell, the more women can make masks. The clientele will increase now that more businesses will be open and also schools. These masks are authentic with two layers of cloth and a filter in between. Very stylish and comfortable and also they are at a good price,” she said.
