EMPD continues normal traffic law enforcement

“As the EMPD, our main function is enforcing the traffic law, crime prevention and enforcing municipal by-laws. Speed enforcement is part of our daily function.”

With the 21-day lockdown in effect, some residents of Alberton have expressed surprise that officers from the EMPD were performing speed control operations during this time.

The RECORD consulted with Kobeli Mokheseng, the acting chief superintendent’s spokesperson for EMPD, enquiring about the role of the metro police officers during this period of lockdown.

“As the EMPD, our main function is enforcing the traffic law, crime prevention and enforcing municipal by-laws. Speed enforcement is part of our daily function,” said Mokheseng regarding their role during lockdown.

“According to our operational plan, we divided our officers accordingly, including the ones assigned jointly with other law-enforcement agencies to deal with the 21-day Covid-19 lockdown.”

Metro police officers will, therefore, continue their usual operations during the lockdown period. EMPD will continue to enforce traffic laws and speed control during the lockdown.
