Silwerkroon seniors battle with lift

Seniors from Silwerkroon flats for the elderly are forced to take the stairs as a result of their lift being broken.

Seniors from Silwerkroon flats for the elderly are forced to take the stairs again as a result of a broken door, leading one into the lift.

Because of this problem, the lift had been shut down.

According to Marge van Eck, a resident at the home, the lift is not broken down, it is, however, switched off for safety reasons.

“There is a pin on the side of the outside door of the lift that sticks out, making it hard to open the door from either inside or outside.

“The home needs to get a contractor to maintain the lift. We haven’t had this problem in a long time until this recent incident,” she said.

She said they need the lift to operate smoothly as the elderly mostly rely on the lift to make their way to their rooms.

The decision to switch off the lift came after one of the residents at the home got stuck in the lift during the week.

Hans Oosthuizen, also a resident at the home, told the RECORD that the broken door is on the third floor and it adversely affects residents as they have to opt for stairs.
