WATCH: Committee leaders in control of Eden Park busy road

They began voluntarily offering their services on January 16 after hearing of an incident where a learner was almost run over by a minibus on the first day of school.

Eden Park’s Extension Four committee leaders claim learners are now in safe hands as they control traffic at busy corners of Petersen Road.

The committee, which consists of 12 members, has taken it upon themselves to control traffic and help children who are crossing the road to go to school.

They began voluntarily offering their services on January 16 after hearing of an incident where a learner was almost run over by a minibus on the first day of school.

With this effort they want to ensure that learners from Stoneridge Primary, Eden Park Primary, Opelweg Primary and Eden Park Secondary School, make their way to school safely.

They station themselves at the corner of Abraham Street and Petersen Road, corner of Willy Street and Petersen Road, and also at the corner of Dodge Street and Petersen Road.

Members operate during rush hour, mostly when people are travelling to work.

Lionwyn April, a committee member, said they play a major role in teaching children about road safety.

Some of the committee members are Lionwyn April, Dumsani Dubazane, Philile Manciya, Tryvina Legransie and Rochelle Cornelius.

“We made efforts to contact the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) to provide us with patrollers, but while waiting for them we decided to control traffic ourselves.

“We also teach the children to observe. We have come upon some motorists who will not comply with us simply because we are not in any uniform,” said April.

He commended taxi drivers and a few motorists for their compliance and obeying the rules of the road.

According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, anyone who controls traffic needs proper training.

He said: “Anything that has to do with roads needs training.

“It is deemed to be unlawful and dangerous to control traffic without any supervision of trained personnel.

“We will look into the matter and respond to it.”
