With the festive season approaching, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) warns people of scammers who have been reportedly scamming people of their money.

This follows complaints received by the City from people who have been scammed by people pretending to be municipal officials.

Many victims were made to believe that they won a tender to supply the City with 240-litre waste wheelie bins.

They were then persuaded into depositing large amounts of money into a bank account that was claimed to belong to the City.

The City continues to warn its residents of the scammers who are said to still scam people of their money under pretense of being City’s employees.

Recently, the City experienced a ransomware attack. Ransomware is malicious software that cyber criminals use to either block or threaten to publish your data unless a sum of money or ransom is paid.

The most common way ransomware enters corporate networks is through email, scammers often include deceiving links or attachments in emails that look harmless.

The City also received complaints of residents who had intruders walking into their premises posing as City officials who monitored water or electricity meter boxes and ultimately robbed them.
