ABOUT 20 Alberton residents gathered in unity to sign a petition on Mayberry Park’s road curve at the corner of JG Strydom and Ruby Street on October 27.

Outraged residents raised their complaints about the curve on the JG Strydom road, which is reported to being a cause for many accidents on that road.

The petition has been drafted to lower the number of accidents on Mayberry road caused by the curve, broken street lights and the absence of warning signs. The petition will then be submitted to the City council. This motion was taken upon by ward 94’s Charmain Peense of Environmental Health and Safety work, who joined hands with ward 94 councillor Marina van Wyk.

The meeting also included an outcry from Tyrone Lessing’s family who also voiced their concern after losing Tyrone in a fatal car accident on the curve. Tyrone’s loved ones who attended on the day, demanded justice to be done and the issues fixed to avoid future accidents.

As previously reported, Tyrone’s body was found in a sewage drain, metres away from where the accident occurred. Demonstrating with placards, his family demanded the drain be closed and the rubble on the side of the road to be removed. They also demanded that the road should have rumble strips.

Charmain Peense, ward 94’s Environmental Health and Safety worker, told the RECORD that it was time that something was done about Mayberry road.

“We want to make this a safer road because there have been several accidents on this road. It’s my first time having to get people to sign a petition like this, but it can only be effective if people get involved. Even if it means one has to go door to door, we will reach out to people to get this running,” said Peense.

Tyrone Lessing’s mother, Charlotte Lessing, said she wants the City council to get the drain closed and safety measure to be put in place on the road.

“My son was in that drain for 14 days, we couldn’t identify him by his face, we could only identify him by tattoos. He probably lost control while driving and he might have still been alive at the time of the accident, but lost his life in that drain,” said Lessing.

Marina van Wyk, ward 94 councillor, said: “I will set up a meeting with the heads of different departments concerning this area. I will also motivate to see these issues resolved, such as the street lights on this road. We will go through all the steps to see how this issue can be resolved quickly.”

Those who wish to sign the petition can contact Charmain Peense on 082 950 3541.
